Helmut Bertalanffy studied medicine and received his neurosurgical training at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. He spent more than 2 years (1990-1992) at the Keio University, Tokyo, Japan, as a scientific fellow of the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation, Bonn, Germany, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Tokyo, Japan. Between 1992 and 1997 he served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Technical University of Aachen, Germany.
In 1997, he became Full Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Philipps-University of Marburg. Ten years later, in July 2007, he was appointed to Full Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. In November 2010, he changed to his present position and became Director of the Center for Vascular Neurosurgery at INI Hannover. Since 2005 he is the Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Neurosurgical Review.
