Helen Phelan is a credentialed diabetes educator and paediatric clinical nurse consultant at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle, Australia. She is a past ISPAD Science School for Health Care Professionals delegate(2008) and co-convenor of the school in 2016 and 2017. Her major research roles have been in the development of evidence-based guidelines for Type 1 Diabetes and the establishment of a national longitudinal diabetes registry, the Australasian Diabetes Data Network (ADDN).
She is currently undertaking a PhD through the University of Sydney Medical School and she is a recipient of an NHMRC Public Health and Health Services Research Scholarship. Helen has been delivering diabetes education for close to 20 years and has a strong record of community engagement.
