Helder Costa DDS, MSc, PhD

Helder Nunes Costa earned his PhD in Orthodontics in 2013 from the Kanagawa Dental University (Japan). He had been granted a previous Doctorate in Biomedical Sciences in 2012 from the Faculty of Medicine, Lisbon University (Portugal). He completed his Master's Degree in Dental Sciences, area of concentration Orthodontics, in 2007 at the Donau University in Krems (Austria). He has a degree in Dental Medicine from Egas Moniz University (Portugal) concluded in 1996.

Between 1998 and 2000 he took part in a postgraduate program in orthodontics at the New York University College of Dentistry (USA). He is an Academic Expert in the Function and Dysfunction of the Masticatory Organ (Donau University, Krems-Austria). He obtained his first title of Specialist in Orthodontics in 2007 (GDC, United Kingdom), and again later in 2009 (OMD, Portugal). He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Egas Moniz University (Lisbon, Portugal), and is also a VieSID (Vienna School of Interdisciplinary Dentistry – education in occlusal medicine) faculty member & teaching staff, and member of VieSID Scientific Advisory Board.

He has been a part-time researcher in the Research Institute of Occlusion Medicine and Research Center of Brain and Oral Science at the Kanagawa Dental University (Japan) from 2007 to 2013. He is also a researcher at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research Egas Moniz (CiiEM; Portugal). His research activities focus on craniofacial morphology, growth, and function with emphasis on the three-dimensionality of the skull. He is the author of various articles and has lectured internationally. He has a private practice in Barreiro, Portugal, where his clinical activity is limited to Orthodontics, Temporomandibular Disorders, and Orofacial Pain.
