In 1998, while still an assistant doctor, he came to the Mannheim University Hospital, where after a short time he was appointed senior physician and in 2009 senior physician. "I am very familiar with the clinic, but it is something else to be able to manage it in the future," says Dr. Burkhardt on the responsible new task. "Anyone who looks at the demographic development in our country will immediately realize that geriatric facilities are becoming increasingly important." The diagnosis and therapy of old and very old people often require a special approach, On January 1, 2011, Dr. Burkhardt temporarily took over the management of the clinic. Geriatrics is a branch of internal medicine. The focus of a geriatric clinic is the treatment of diseases that are typically associated with the aging process. Particular attention is paid to so-called multimorbidity, the simultaneous occurrence of several, often chronic diseases in old age. The IV. Medical University Clinic treats around 1,500 patients per year, who are treated as inpatients for an average of two weeks.
