Prof. Dr. Heiner Wedemeyer is director of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University Hospital Essen. Heiner Wedemeyer studied medicine and musicology in Gottingen. He completed his specialist training in the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology at the Hannover Medical School. He followed the call for a W2 professorship for clinical infectiology in liver transplantation at the Hannover Medical School in 2012 and in February 2018. He eventually joined the W3 Professor of Internal Medicine, specializing in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Duisburg-Essen. The clinical focus of Professor Wedemeyer covers the entire field of gastroenterology and hepatology as well as infectiology and transplantation medicine.

Heiner Wedemeyer focuses on inflammatory and viral diseases of the liver and the gastrointestinal tract. From 1998 to 2000, he examined cellular immune responses to hepatitis C as part of a DFG-funded postgraduate scholarship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA. From 2001, he led a working group on cellular immunology in viral at the Hannover Medical School hepatitis. The scientific work of Professor Wedemeyer has been funded by the German Research Foundation, the European Union, the BMBF and the Else Kroner-Fresenius-Stiftung.
