Heather Herrington, MD is an Associate Professor in the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). An Alabama native, she graduated from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 2001. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Texas, Houston and then completed her Geriatric Medicine fellowship at Harvard Medical School. She received additional training in Palliative Care through the Harvard Medical School "Program in Palliative Care Education and Practice" course, and additional training in Medical Education through the Harvard Macy Institute's "Program for Educators in the Health Professions", for which she has subsequently served as a returning Faulty Scholar. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Care.
Dr. Herrington joined the faculty at UAB in 2006, and she attends on both the inpatient geriatrics and inpatient palliative care services. She was awarded a 5-year, K01 Geriatric Academic Career Award in 2010, which will allow her to develop curricula to teach geriatrics to hospice and palliative care providers. She was also appointed as a national John A. Hartford/AFAR Scholar.
