Dr. Oken is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Zoology and a M.S. in Parasitology. In 1983, he graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School with Honors and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his internship and residency training at the University of Maryland, followed by an additional year as Chief Resident. He is board certified in the specialty of Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Oken has continued to be involved in academic medicine and is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland. Every Wednesday afternoon for 28 years he ran the Ambulatory Internal Medicine Clinic for the Residency Program at the University of Maryland and was recently given the Residents Teaching Award for service. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and was previously the Chairman of the Health and Policy Committee of the Maryland Chapter. He has also served on the Howard County Board of Health.
Dr. Oken served for 14 years as Chairman of Medicine at Howard County General Hospital, where he is currently on staff as an Attending Physician. Dr. Oken has been listed in Best Doctors of America every year since 1997. He also continues to do research with omega-3 fatty acids and has published a variety of articles in professional journals.
