Prof. Dr. Hans Reimer Rodewaldwas born in Hamburg in 1958. He studied veterinary medicine at the University of Hanover. In 1988 he received his doctorate from the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Immunobiology in Freiburg. From 1988 to 1989 he did research at the Cancer Center, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. From 1989 to 1992 he was a Fellow at the Laboratory of Immunobiology, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the Department of Pathology at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

In 1997 he habilitated in immunology at the University of Basel. From 1999 to 2010 he taught as a professor at the University of Ulm. Since 2010 he has headed the Department of Cellular Immunology at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and is a professor at the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg. He has received several research awards, including the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2019.
