Hans Hamburger studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam and obtained his PhD in a thesis called Locognosia the ability to localize tactile stimuli on the body in June 1980. After a specialization in neurology and clinical neurophysiology, he was invited to chair the department of clinical neurophysiology of the municipal hospital of Amsterdam and later also was head of the neurology department which he ran for more than 30 years till 2016. During that period he developed a system to measure dyslexia using Brain EEG Topography. In 1990 he was the founder and head of the Amsterdam Sleep Centre, the largest multidisciplinary accredited Sleep clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of all sleep disorders in The Netherlands. He founded two more sleep centres and is currently the head of the Amsterdam Sleep Centre at the Boerhaave Medical Centre. He is the immediate past president of the Netherlands Society for Sleep- and Wake research, NSWO, and is co-author of several books and many articles on sleep. He has organised many training courses and conferences on sleep and sleep disorders.
