Dr. Johannes Bloem, MD, Ph.D. a professor of radiology, director of the musculoskeletal section, and past chair of the department of radiology at the Leiden University Medical Center. Bloem's experience includes clinical and teaching activities at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, DC.

Bloem has published more than 170 papers, more than 50 book chapters, 13 books, and 9 audiovisual teaching programs. Bloem and have been an active member of professional societies such as International Skeletal Society (faculty, editorial board, reviewer), European Society of Skeletal Radiology (faculty, founding member, past president, past board member), Radiological Society of North America (faculty, reviewer), International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (Faculty, past board member, president of educational committee). Bloem has received numerous honors (including honorary memberships of 3 national radiological societies, awards for scientific work from the European Society of Skeletal Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, American Roentgen Ray Society, British Institute of Radiology, Bristol Tumor Registry).

The musculoskeletal section at the University Hospital Leiden has a long tradition in diagnosing musculoskeletal disease, especially tumors and conditions that may mimic the presence of a tumor. Our expertise is based on decades of daily work in this field both in our tertiary musculoskeletal unit as well as within the Dutch Committee on Bone Tumors.
