Dr. Hannele Laivuori M.D, Ph.D. is an associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, Tampere University and an assistant chief physician at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Tampere University Hospital, Finland. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and in clinical genetics and is an adjunct professor in medical genetics. She is scientifically recognized for her work on the genetics of pre-eclampsia. Her research interests include genetics, molecular mechanisms, risk factors, and later life implications of common pregnancy disorders.

She is the principal investigator of the research group ”Pregnancy and Genes”. She also serves as a clinical team leader in the FinnGen project at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), HiLIFE Unit, University of Helsinki. FinnGen is an international large-scale genomics public-private partnership research project, which brings together Finnish biobanks, universities, hospital districts, and international pharmaceutical companies. She has led the clinical translation arm of the InterPregGen project funded by the EU 7th Framework Programme, the largest Genetics of pre-eclampsia study to date. She is an active mentor having supervised several graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. She has also been active in improving the careers of clinical medical researchers.
