Dr. Mace is a locally trained specialist anesthetist. Following his undergraduate medical degree in New Zealand, he moved to Australia and completed residency and anesthesia training in Western Australia. Dr. Mace has undertaken subspecialty fellowships in obstetric anesthesia (King Edward Memorial Hospital), retrieval medicine (Royal Flying Doctor Service WA), and liver transplant anesthesia (University of Toronto, Canada).

Dr. Mace's practice is shared across the public and private health sectors. He holds a public appointment at Fiona Stanley and Fremantle Hospitals where he is involved in anesthesia for upper gastrointestinal and liver surgery, and obstetric anesthesia, and also practices acute pain medicine. He holds a Clinical Senior Lecturer position at the University of Western Australia.

Dr. Mace's clinical interests include anemia management, transfusion (and its alternatives), and perioperative coagulation. Dr. Mace directs the pre-operative anemia screening and smoking cessation programs at Fiona Stanley and is heavily involved in teaching and research.
