Dr. Hairil Rizal Abdullah received his undergraduate medical training at the University of Malaya, Malaysia, before migrating to Singapore in 2008. He was awarded the Master of Medicine by the National University of Singapore in 2010. In 2012, he underwent a fellowship in the subspecialty of Perioperative Medicine at the University of Toronto, Canada, and further obtained MSc (Periop Med) from University College London in 2021. As a perioperative physician, he is passionate about improving surgical patient outcomes. He led the team which revamped the preoperative process in SGH, resulting in the creation of the Preoperative Assessment Centre, which is a one-stop multidisciplinary center to assess, counsel, and optimize patients prior to elective surgeries. He is also the Institutional Value Lead, SGH with the responsibility to facilitate Value-Driven Care initiatives in SGH, as well as the Chair of the hospital’s ERAS Committee.
Dr. Hairil led multiple studies examining new approaches in perioperative risk assessment and mitigation strategies. He is the PI for a large registry involving nearly 200,000 surgical patients in SGH, which has provided insights on how the perioperative outcomes can be improved. This registry is the backbone of his current Ph.D. thesis, which is focusing on the use of Data Science in healthcare.
