Dr. Guy E. Boeckxstaens, MD, Ph.D. is a Gastroenterologist and Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven. Boeckxstaens obtained his medical degree in 1987 and his Ph.D. degree in 1991. In 1994, he completed his clinical training in Internal Medicine / Gastroenterology and accepted a staff position in the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In 2005, he became a Professor of Neurogastroenterology at the Academic Medical Center and was appointed co-chair of the department of Gastroenterology and head of gastrointestinal research.
He received several national and international prizes and received the prestigious European Research Council (ERC), Advanced Grant, in 2013 and 2019. He was Secretary and President of the Dutch Society of Neurogastroenterology. Currently, he is an Associate Editor of Gut, a member of the Editorial Board of Neurogastroenterology, and a Board Member of the Research Council of the University of Leuven, Belgium. He currently serves as chair of the Rome IV committee on Fundamentals of Neurogastroenterology – Physiology Motility & Sensation. He has published over 330 peer-reviewed manuscripts. The scientific expertise of the research group of Prof. Boeckxstaens relates to neurogastroenterology and neuro-immune interactions in the gastrointestinal tract. The mechanisms leading to diseases such as achalasia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, irritable bowel disease, chronic constipation, functional dyspepsia, and postoperative ileus have been the main topics of interest over the past 20 years.
