Dr. Sant'Anna is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University and a staff neonatologist at McMaster Children's Hospital. Dr. Sant'Anna earned his degree in 1988 in Brazil and completed his training as a Pediatrician and Neonatologist in 1992. He was appointed to a Neonatologist position in Brazil in 1998 where he worked until 2001. Dr. Sant'Anna obtained his PhD in Child Health (Pulmonary Physiology) in 2002 in a combined PhD program between Brazil and McGill University.
His area of research at McGill was "Control of ventilation in newborn animals", where he studied the long-term effects of modifications in caloric intake and metabolic rate in early life on the control of ventilation latter in life. He also developed a hypothesis to explain the mechanism of the phenomena of catch-up growth. During Dr. Sant'Anna's research fellowship he evaluated the blood flow distribution in animals to various tissues during warm-up in hypoxia and the cerebral blood flow of animals resuscitated with room air versus 100% oxygen.
