Guido Gerken medical studies at Johannes-Gutenberg University Mainz were followed by research in the Department of Molecular Biology and Hepatocarcinogenesis at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France. Among other things, he worked as a senior physician at the I. Medical Clinic and Polyclinic of the University of Mainz and subsequently became a specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology. In 1996 he was appointed professor at the University of Mainz. Since 1998 Prof. Dr. Ing. Gerken Chair and Director of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Center for Internal Medicine, University Hospital Essen.
As Managing Director since 2005, he has been heading the Center for Internal Medicine at the University Hospital in Essen as well as various DFG projects (including Collaborative Research Centers and Clinical Research Units). in particular as speaker of the DFG-KFO 117 in the 2nd funding period 2008-2011). Since 2002, Gerken has been Project Manager and Deputy Chairman of the HepNet-West / National Competence Network for Viral Hepatitis in Essen and Bochum. Gerken is past president of the North Rhine Society for Gastroenterology and the Rheinisch-Westfalische Gesellschaft für Innere Medizin (RWGIM) 2012.
