Gregory Burke, MD, MSc is the Senior Associate Dean for Research and Chief Science Officer at the Wake Forest School of Medicine. Dr Burke led public health sciences for nearly 20 year during which time the department became the largest research department at the medical center and achieved national prominence. He has devoted his research career towards seeking a clearer understanding of the etiology of chronic diseases and the development of strategies for chronic disease prevention in patients and communities. Dr Burke has led a number of national research studies including observational cohorts and clinical trials, such as the Women’s Health Initiative, the Cardiovascular Health Study, the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, the Ginkgo Enhancing Memory Study, and the Carolinas Collaborative Project. Dr Burke has received international recognition for his efforts in population health and clinical prevention. He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and has served on many major national committees including: National Chair of the AHA’s Council on Epidemiology/Prevention; NHLBI’s Board of Extramural Advisors, Co-Chair of the NHLBI’s Prevention Task Force, and a chair in CDC’s National Forum for the Prevention of Heart Disease and Stroke. Dr Burke has been widely recognized as a leader in multidisciplinary and multi-institutional research and was the 2015 recipient of the prestigious American Heart Association Population Research Prize and elected in 2016 to be an American Heart Association Distinguished Scientist.
