Dr. Graham McGinnis, Ph.D. joined the UAB Center for Exercise Medicine, and the laboratory of Dr. Martin Young in August 2014. Currently, my research is directed towards understanding the impact of environmental factors, like time of day and circadian rhythms, on cardiac physiology and pathophysiology. Evidence has shown that alterations in the light/dark cycle, in shift workers, for example, can alter the circadian clock and contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease. Projects in the lab utilizing genetically modified mice with disrupted cardiomyocyte circadian function are being conducted to examine the time of day-dependent fluctuations in myocardial insulin sensitivity, which may play a critical role in cardiac metabolism, contractility, and protein synthesis.
