Graeme Eisenhofer received his PhD in 1983 from the University of Otago, New Zealand, with thesis work involving clinical research on autonomic and neuroendocrine systems. He then moved to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where under the guidance of Dr. Irwin Kopin he carried out basic and clinical studies mapping the pathways of catecholamine metabolism. In 1988 he moved to the Baker Heart Research Institute (Melbourne, Australia), where he worked with Dr. Murray Esler on sympathetic nerve function in health and disease. He returned to the NIH in 1991 as head of the Clinical Neurochemistry Unit before taking up a Professorship in the Institute of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine and the Department of Medicine at the University Hospital in Dresden, Germany
