Dr. Giuseppe Maria Raffa, MD is a Cardiologist at the IRCCS-ISMETT (Mediterranean Institute for Transplantation and Advanced Specialized Therapies). He has been involved in the research Relationship between endothelially derived vasoactive agents and diseases of the aortic valve and ascending aorta”. The scientific project is in collaboration with Anders Franco-Cereceda, Professor and Academic Head, of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Karolinska University Hospital of Stockholm. He also engaged in the “ASAP-project at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Karolinska University Hospital. The ASAP study is the largest worldwide evaluation of patients with bicuspid aortic valves undergoing cardiac surgery recruiting 600 patients over a 6-year period. He was also involved in the OPERA multi-center trial. This is a large multi-center study to examine whether peri-operative intake of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids will reduce the occurrence of postoperative atrial fibrillation or flutter in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. He hopes to extend his current work by examining the effects of several cardiovascular drugs and surgical techniques on LV remodeling and to evaluate it through imaging modalities available (cardiac CT scan and RMI).
