Dr. Gilles Dreyfus obtained his medical degree from the University of Paris, France in 1978. From 1978 to 1983 he was a Resident in cardiac surgery at the Paris Hospitals, where he was trained in adult and congenital cardiac surgery guided by Professors Binet, Dubost, Guilmet, and Neveux. From October 1983 to 1987, he was the Chef de Clinique for Professor Alain Carpentier, senior resident and staff surgeon at the Broussais Hospital. From 1987 to 1989, he was a Consultant surgeon of the Hôpitaux de Paris, working with Professor Carpentier. In 1983, he trained for 6 months at the University of Stanford to specialize in heart and lung transplantation with Professor N. Shumway. Back in Paris, he started a transplant program at the Broussais Hospital, in the department headed by Professor Carpentier.

In 1989, he was appointed Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery by the University of Paris and in 1995 became Head of Department at the Foch Hospital. In 2000, Professor Dreyfus was invited by Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub to join his team as a Consultant in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Harefield and Royal Brompton Hospital. While in London he also served as Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Imperial College London School of Medicine and was Director of Transplantation and Director of Surgery for many years.
