Gilbert Donders became fascinated by the study of genital infections in Africa in the mid-80s, leading to his PhD thesis defence in 1997. Ever since he continued to research and teaching, first at Leuven University, and since 2013 as a professor at Antwerp University, while still working as a gynaecologist at the Regional Hospital in Tienen, Belgium. His main focuses are vulvovaginitis, vulvodynia and HPV infections/vaccination. He founded a research organization, 'Femicare', dealing with investigator-driven as well as industry-sponsored clinical trials since 2001. He is a founding member and President of the International Society for Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ISIDOG) and has a worldwide network of collaborators and lab facilities.
