Dr. Gerhard Bavinzski graduated from Vienna Medical School in 1987. While studying medicine he got interested in neuroanatomy and therefore he was promoted by Axel Perneczky to be accepted for neurosurgical residency at the general hospital in Vienna in 1988. The neurosurgical clinic at that time was headed by Prof. Wolfgang Koos, who proposed him to focus on endovascular neursurgery. In 1989 he got involved in the neurovascular group training program, which included an endovascular and open surgical training under the supervision of Bernd Richling. After further subspecialization in open and endovascular surgery, he became head of the neurovascular section in 1997.
In 2002 he acted as vice-chairman to develop a newly founded neurosurgical department in lower Austria. In 2003 he returned to the medical University of Vienna with the aim to further develop the cerebrovascular program, which should cover the management of patients with neurovascular disease in the eastern part of Austria around Vienna. His special interests lie in the combined treatment of complex brain aneurysms and AVMs/dAVFs. His research work included histopathological examinations of coiled aneurysms, clinical studies on embolized and clipped aneurysms, treatment of unruptured aneurysms, vasospasm, revascularization in chronic cerebral ischemia, innovative bypass techniques. He is the director of the annually held course on microsurgery and cerebral revascularization in Vienna.
