Dr. Fernandez received his medical degree from Drexel University (MCP), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1992 and completed his residency and fellowship training in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology, Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology respectively at New York University Medical Center in New York City. His early career was focused on oncologic pathology specializing on tumor markers in a commercial reference laboratory setting (Impath Inc. and Genzyme Genetics).

Next at Aureon Biosciences Dr. Fernandez led a small team of pathologists and a group of imaging engineers in the development of multispectral fluorescence based predictive and prognostic multivariate assays. Leaving the East coast he spent two years as the Medical Director for Ventana/Roche Tissue Diagnostics Digital Pathology division in California where he continued working on image analysis-based multivariate assays and on regulatory strategy for digital pathology. Recently he is back in New York at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as an Associate Professor of Pathology and Medical Director of Precise MD, an innovation initiative developing multivariate models, assays and computational pathology infrastructure.
