Dr. Maarman holds various degrees (BSc. BSc. Honours, MSc. and Ph.D.) in cardiovascular physiology from the University of Cape Town and the University of Stellenbosch. He completed research fellowships in Europe, received multiple awards, and authored approximately 34 publications (published & manuscripts in preparation). He is a specialist biomedical scientist, and his research focuses on underlying mechanisms of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in TB, cardioprotection in PAH, & novel drug targets. He has supervised multiple postgraduate students & in 2018, he received a research grant of R1.4. Million. He is currently a lecturer and principal investigator, with research collaborations in SA, UK, Germany, and USA. Dr. Maarman and colleagues launched a clinical study to investigate the pathogenesis of PAH in patients who previously had TB. This is complemented by studies on gene knockout and TB models to explore mechanisms.
