George Coukos PhD, MD

George Coukos is both Head of the UNIL CHUV Oncology Department and Director of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research Lausanne.

A pioneer in cancer immunotherapy, of which he has become one of the world figures, Professor Coukos is a specialist in gynecological cancers. He notably created the Ovarian Cancer Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, where he worked for 22 years. Previously, he had worked for 11 years at the University Hospital of Modena, Italy.

Holder of numerous scientific distinctions, Professor Coukos is the author of more than 200 significant publications in his field. He benefits from the support of multiple funds and foundations for the development of his research.

Much of his career as a clinician and cancer researcher has focused on immunotherapy and the exploration of tumor immunology, with a focus on ovarian cancer. In the early 2000s, his research uncovered the existence of spontaneous immune responses in ovarian tumors and described their influence on the severity of the disease.
