George Alexander Fielding, Professor of Surgery at NYU School of Medicine, is a pioneer in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery. Dr. Fielding studied medicine at the University of Queensland, graduating in 1979, and completed his medical training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. During his postgraduate training, he developed interests in laparoscopic and hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery and then pursued advanced training in the field in Britain and Switzerland. In 1989, he returned Royal Brisbane Hospital as a staff surgeon, and continues to serve the Hospital as a visiting surgeon. Later, he opened a private practice at the Wesley Hospital, also in Brisbane, earning a reputation for his expertise in laparoscopic, bariatric, and hepato-biliary surgery. To date, he has performed more than 4000 bariatric surgeries, and has extensive experience operating on "super" obese patients and obese children.
