Georg Stingl MD

Dr. Georg Stingl, MD, is Professor Emeritus at the Medical University of Vienna. After graduation from medical school, he received his residency training in dermatology at the University of Vienna Medical School. After postdoctoral fellowships at the U.S. National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, he pursued his academic career in Innsbruck and Vienna, Austria, and was finally appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dermatology of Vienna’s Medical University.

Dr. Stingl’s major scientific achievements include the discovery of Langerhans cells as immunocytes and the identification and characterization of the indigenous T cell population in murine epidermis as well as major contributions to our understanding of the pathogenesis of inflammatory, allergic and neoplastic skin diseases. As a physician, he was involved in the evaluation of the safety and efficacy of important immunomodulatory compounds. Dr. Stingl’s scientific oeuvre consists of 300 original manuscripts, more than a hundred reviews and book chapters as well as several books.

He is the recipient of several prestigious awards such as the Stephen Rothman Award of the Society of Investigative Dermatology and the Herxheimer Medal of the German Dermatological Society. He is an honorary doctor of Budapest’s Semmelweis University and an honorary member of the leading societies of clinical and investigative dermatology. His prominent role in national and international biomedical research is also mirrored in his being a member of the Austrian and German National Academies of Sciences and of the US National Academy of Medicine.
