Gavin J. Murphy BSc, MB ChB, FRCS(Eng), MD, FRCS(CTh)

Gavin Murphy is an academic cardiac surgeon at the University of Leicester. He graduated in Medicine at the University of Bristol and went on to obtain his MD from the University of Leicester. He trained in Cardiothoracic Surgery in the South West of England and in Lausanne Switzerland, and was appointed as a Walport (HEFCE) Consultant Senior Lecturer in Cardiac Surgery at the University of Bristol in 2007. He was appointed to the British Heart Foundation Chair of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Leicester in 2012.
His research interests include diseases affecting the thoracic aorta, blood management, and the prevention of perioperative organ injury. His Research opportunities include clinical and non-clinical research fellowships in cardiac surgery (doctoral and post-doctoral), research interests include randomised controlled trials of novel organ protection interventions, and the application of the –omics techniques to increase our understanding of the pathogenesis of cardiometabolic disease, organ failure and aortic disease.
