Dr. Gary J. Whitman is a tenured professor of breast imaging and breast radiation oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) in Houston, Texas, where he serves as the director of breast imaging research, the medical director of the mobile mammography program, and the lead interpreting physician for The Texas Medical Center mammography program. Dr. Whitman joined the MDACC faculty in 1996 after serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Whitman is a former chair of the MDACC faculty senate, and he currently serves as the faculty senate navigator. Dr. Whitman is a fellow of the American College of Radiology, the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI), the Society of Ultrasound in Radiology, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), and the Association of Academic Radiology (AAR).

Dr. Whitman is the current vice president of the SBI, and he is a former president of the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) and the AAR. Dr. Whitman is a former recipient of the Figley Fellowship from the AARS and the American Journal of Roentgenology. Dr. Whitman is a former treasurer of the AIUM, and he served on the AIUM board of governors. Dr. Whitman is a former recipient of the AIUM presidential service award.

Dr. Whitman is interested in all areas of breast imaging, including mammography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging. Dr. Whitman's research interests include mobile mammography, high-risk screening, high-risk breast lesions, inflammatory breast cancer, and axillary lymph node evaluation.
