Professor Wessel received his BA from the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, USA) and his Ph.D. from Duke University (Durham NC USA). Following post‐doctoral training at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (Houston TX USA) began his independent research career at Brown University in 1990. There he teaches courses in Reproductive Biology, Synthetic Biology, and a medical elective course (Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University) in the Bionic Human.

His research focuses on broad experimental models of fertilization, oocyte development, primordial germ cell formation, and oocyte quality using a variety of organisms including echinoderms, mice, and humans. His professional activities outside of the University include membership on multiple editorial boards, chairperson elect of the Gordon Research Conference on Fertilization and Activation of Development, and on grant review panels for the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Professor Wessel also pretends to be a fast runner – which is harder every year.
