Gary H. OberlenderChief, Assistant Professor | Roanoke, Virginia
Dr. Oberlender was born in Philadelphia, PA and is a graduate of LaSalle College and Hahnemann Medical College. He completed his Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Virginia Affiliated Program in 1985 and joined the staff at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem, Virginia.
At the Salem VAMC, he served as Chief of Geriatric Medicine from 1990 until 2003 and also held various other clinical, educational, and administrative positions. During his years at Salem, Dr. Oberlender established and directed the Geriatric Evaluation Unit and served as Medical Director of the Extended Care Rehabilitation Center.
Dr. Oberlender retired from the VA in September 2006 and founded SeniorEvaluations, LLC, a private consultative practice of geriatric medicine offering In-Home Comprehensive Geriatric Evaluation for seniors and Independent Medical Assessments of Decision-Making Capacity for adults of all ages. Dr. Oberlender is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine as a Diplomat in Internal Medicine and a Specialist in Geriatric Medicine and he is an elected Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
