Gary Firkins had a background in customer service and management prior to becoming a Registered Mental Nurse (RMN) and has 35 years’ experience as a trainer. Currently based at Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Gary developed an in-house training model for the person centred management of behaviour that challenges services called De-escalation, Management and Intervention (DMI©).

Gary’s training career began whilst working in the retail industry where he developed customer care training for a large grocery chain that was delivered nationwide. From there Gary moved into the NHS and he runs the training team that delivers a wide range of conflict resolution and management training to the Trust’s 8,500 staff and also externally in the Health and Social Care sector.

Gary's experience is often sought nationally and he was part of a DoH Positive Behaviour Support and Physical Interventions (PBSPI) Expert Reference group as well as other stakeholder groups and panels including the Skills for Care commissioning standards project group for PBS and restrictive practices and the Independent Advisory Panel on Deaths in Custody stakeholder group.
