Dr. Mandel is a Senior Scientist in the Vollum Institute at the Oregon Health & Science University and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. She has been on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, Tufts University, and SUNY at Stony Brook and has received numerous awards for her outstanding contributions to molecular neuroscience.
Her research is focused on revealing molecular mechanisms responsible for regulation of gene expression and excitability in the nervous system. The Mandel lab was the first to discover a transcription factor called REST, a master controller of excitability genes expressed only in the nervous system. REST is also expressed in non-neuronal cells where it functions as a tumor suppressor.
