Gail Annich is a native of St. Paul, Alberta, Canada and graduated from the University of Alberta Medical School in 1988. After completing her residency in paediatrics at the University of British Columbia 1993, she completed two fellowships in paediatric critical care medicine, the first at British Columbia Children's Hospital in 1994 and the second at The Hospital for Sick Children where she was also chief fellow in 1995.
In 1995 she moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan to attend the University of Michigan for both an Extracorporeal Life Support Fellowship and also to embark upon a Masters of Science in Clinical Research Design/Statistical Analysis, both of which she completed in 1997. In 1997, she joined the Pediatric Critical Care Faculty at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan. During her tenure at the University of Michigan, Dr. Annich was the Associate Director of ECMO program, the Director of the Pediatric ECMO Program, Director of the CPR/Rapid Response Team for C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and the Medical Director for the PICU.
Her research field is in both Extracorporeal Life Support and blood/biomaterial compatibility and thrombogenicity for which she is published. She is a core organizer for the annual Children’s National Symposium: ECMO and the Advanced Therapies for Respiratory Failure. In 2012 she was the senior editor for the 4th Edition of the ECMO textbook. Her passion is the clinical bedside care of critically ill patients and the teaching of this. In the past 7 years she has focused much of her teaching on simulation techniques and Mock Codes for which she received the Pediatric Faculty teaching award in 2012.
In September of 2014, she finally returned home to resume the practice of paediatric critical care medicine here at The Hospital for Sick Children and take on the role of Director of Quality and Safety for the Department of Critical Care Medicine.
