Gabor Foldes MD, PhD

He was born in Budapest in 1974. He graduated summa cum laude at Semmelweis University, Budapest in 1998, and obtained his PhD there in 2002. Between 1998 and 2008, he completed his trainings and worked afterwards as an assistant professor at 1st Department of Medicine, Semmelweis University. He specialised in Internal Medicine in 2006 and in Cardiology in 2009. In August 2008 he moved to the Heart Center, Semmelweis University into a new clinical post and to head of the newly established stem laboratory and group. He has held longer visiting positions at Harvard Medical School Massachusetts General Hospital, National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, and University of Oulu.

Dr Földes’ research interests are in particular the cellular and molecular mechanisms of cardiac remodelling and heart failure. In addition he has a long-standing interest in cardiac regeneration and continues to be involved with pluripotent stem cell characterisation projects. He is currently an active member of international scientific societies, invited speaker at Hungarian and international cardiovascular and stem cell meetings, supervisor in the School of Doctoral Studies at Semmelweis University, and author and reviewer for internationally recognised cardiology and stem cell journals and books. In recognition of his scientific and clinical work, he was awarded with a number of prizes and grants, including the European Society of Cardiology Research Grant, the Cellome Award, the Hungarian Society of Cardiology Lozsadi Norbert Award,the Novartis Foundation Award, the Semmelweis University Bozai Award and the British Heart Foundation Reflections of Research Award.
