G. Burkhard Mackensen, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.S.E., is UW Medicine's chief of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, UW's Medical Education and Research endowed professor in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine and adjunct professor of Cardiology and Medicine. Dr. Mackensen is an internationally recognized expert in cardiothoracic anesthesiology, critical care medicine, and interventional echocardiography.

Dr. Mackensen earned his M.D. from the University of Hamburg, Germany and his Ph.D. from the Technical University in Munich, Germany. His clinical interests include cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesiology, critical care medicine, transesophageal echocardiography, and interventional echocardiography. His research interests include clinical outcomes after cardiothoracic surgery, the utility of three-dimensional echocardiography and the value of three-dimensional printing of the heart and its components.
