Appelbaum is director, Clinical Research Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, head, Division of Oncology at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and president, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

Dr. Appelbaum graduated from Dartmouth College and Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed internal medicine training at the University of Michigan and medical oncology fellowship training at the National Cancer Institute. He remained at the National Cancer Institute as an investigator until 1978 when he moved to Seattle to join the faculty of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington. Dr. Appelbaum’s research focuses on the biology and treatment of acute myeloid leukemia, with a particular emphasis on hematopoietic cell transplantation. He was the lead author of the first paper describing the successful use of autologous marrow transplantation.
