Vermolen is at the Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics at the Delft University of Technology and leads several projects in Applied Mathematics. His projects are in mathematical biology, such as predicting the growth of cancer (pancreas and skin) and cancer metastasis. Furthermore, Vermolen is heavily involved in modelling the evolution of skin post-trauma. Further applications Vermolen is working on are in porous media flows related to oil recovery and infiltration of water into the subsurface. The mathematical methods that he uses vary from partial differential equations and finite element methods to implementing stochastic models and estimation of uncertainty. He has done his PhD in mathematical models for phase transitions in metals and alloys at the Delft University and conducted a large part at the Max Planck Institut in Germany. Subsequently, he has done a project in the Mathematics Center in Amsterdam in mathematical analysis of models for transport in porous media. Vermolen is an editor of the journal Plos Computational Biology.
