Fred Redfern moved to Henderson in 1968 when his father opened a general surgery practice. Dr. Redfern was able to go to the University of Southern California on a Trustee Scholarship, the first one offered to a Nevadan. He studied through the engineering honors program, specifically biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering in regard to orthopedic surgery. He wrote a paper on a total hip replacement at 18. Dr. Redfern attended medical school at the University of Nevada and then completed his orthopedic surgery residency at his alma mater, the University of Southern California.

He has been able to conduct research through the years on joint replacement, fracture treatment, and sports medicine, as well as bone grafting, arthroscopic shoulder and knee reconstruction, and venous thromboembolism prevention. Dr. Redfern’s engineering background and research experience have enabled him to incorporate and understand new beneficial technologies as they are introduced, and avoid using devices that have developed problems.

He is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, including the Sports Medicine sub-specialty certification. Dr. Redfern is licensed in both California and Nevada.

He is a graduate instructor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Orthopaedic Biomechanics. Dr. Redfern is also considered an expert in the medical industry, being named as a “Top Doctor” in Las Vegas Magazine in 2000, receiving the State Orthopaedic Society of the Year Award in 2005, and being elected in 2014 for outstanding accomplishments in Orthopedic Leadership to the American Orthopaedic Association.

He is a leader in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), having served on the Board of Directors and as Chair of the Board of Councilors.
