Dr. Vega received his MD from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain) and his PhD from the University of Navarra (Spain). He did residency in Anatomic Pathology at the University Clinic de Navarra, in Pamplona (Spain). After completing his training he did a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Hematopathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center (sponsored by the Fundacion Barrie de la Maza, La Coruna, Spain) and in the Department of Pathology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He did residency in Anatomic Pathology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and he completed one year of fellowship training in Hematopathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

In 2006, he received The Janice Davis Singletary Award for Clinical Fellowship in Lymphoma and the same year, he joined the faculty in the Department of Hematopathology at MD Anderson. He served on the faculty at the department of Hematopathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center from 2006 till 08/2013 before leaving for University of Miami/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center where he served as the Director of the Division of Hematopathology and Professor in the Department of Pathology until May 2019. He also served as Vice Chair of Translational Research of Pathology and Medical Director of the Biorepository at Sylvester Cancer Center.

Currently, Dr Vega is Professor and Lymphoma Section Head in the Department of Hematopathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is doing diagnostic signout of malignant lymphomas and leukemias and also leading a NCI funded research laboratory in translational research in lymphoma and chemoresistance. Dr. Vega has 176 publications in peer-review journals and numerous contributions to books including the last edition of Tumors of the Lymph Node and Spleen, Atlas of Tumor Pathology of the AFIP (2017).
