Jia was Born in 1958 in Jiangsu. Member of the Communist Party of China. Fan Jia graduated from the graduate school of former Shanghai Medical University with a doctoral degree. From September 1999 to March 2000, he carried out the basic and clinical research on liver transplantation and hepatic surgery as senior visiting scholar in the Transplantation Center of University of Pittsburgh. He served as the vice president of Zhongshan Hospital from March 2003 to December 2013. Since December 2013, he has served as the president of Zhongshan Hospital as well as the standing vice director of Liver Cancer Research Institute, professor and doctoral supervisor.

At present, he also serves as chairman of Oncology Society, Chinese Medical Association, standing director of Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, vice chairman of Shanghai Hospital Association, fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He is the reviewer of several renowned international magazines, including Lancet, J Clin Oncol and Oncogene. He is the editor-in-chief of Chinese Journal of Clinical Medicine, the deputy editor or editorial board member of more than 20 magazines, such as Chinese Journal of Digestive Surgery, Chinese Journal of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Chinese Journal of Experimental Surgery and Chinese Medical Journal.

He has long been devoted to clinical diagnosis and treatment, basic research and teaching of hepatic cancer surgery. He himself has finished over 8000 cases of complicated operations of liver tumor resection, covering various kinds of highly difficult operations of hepatic surgery and curing a great number of liver cancer patients, which makes him rank among the international tops. He invented multi-modal comprehensive treatment for portal vein tumor thrombus, which made it possible to provide partial treatment for the previously untreatable condition of advanced liver cancer with co-existing portal vein tumor thrombus, which won him the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2008.
