Dr. Harris has developed a multidisciplinary approach to study the molecular virology, pathogenesis, immunology, epidemiology, clinical aspects, and control of dengue. Her work investigates viral and host factors that modulate disease severity and immune correlates of protection and pathogenesis, using in vitro approaches, animal models, and research involving human populations. In vitro studies have focused on functional characterization of antibodies and B cell memory response, virus-host interactions and viral pathogenesis, viral fitness and evolution, and the mechanism of DENV translation and replication. The mouse model developed by her group recapitulates many aspects of human dengue disease and immune response, including antibody-dependent enhancement of DENV infections, and is being used to identify antibody determinants of protection, enhancement, and therapeutic efficacy and to test different classes of candidate antiviral compounds
