prof. dr. Esther de Vries was trained as a medical doctor, specializing in pediatrics and in immunology. Vries focus on everything that is ‘unusual’, from uncommon adverse events of promising treatments to the recognition of rare diseases by non-expert healthcare professionals. For this, Vries uses two very different but – Vries think – complementary approaches: patient-centered qualitative research on the organization and quality of healthcare, and personalized quantitative research on data-driven solutions for automated support enabling timely recognition of ‘the unusual. In both topics, Vries collaborates with a data scientist to support development in the field.
