Dr. Schipani graduated as M.D. first (1985), and Ph.D. later (1989) with Prof. Aldo Pinchera at University of Pisa-Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, Italy. In 1988, she specialized in Endocrinology in Pisa. In 1990, she joined the Endocrine Unit led by Prof. Henry Kronenberg at MGH-Harvard Medical School as Postdoctoral Fellow in Prof. Gino Segre's and Prof. Harald Jueppner's laboratories. In 1997, she was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine. In 2006, she was promoted Associate Professor of Medicine at MGH-Harvard Medical School.

In 2011, she was recruited at Indiana University-Medical School as Full Professor of Medicine with tenure and Adjunct Full Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology. Since 2013, she has been Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery with tenure and Professor Medicine/Endocrinology at the University of Michigan-Medical School. Dr. Schipani studies molecular and cellular mechanisms of cartilage and bone development and homeostasis. She has received numerous national and international recognitions. NIH has funded her research since 1997.
