Erio Barale-Thomas graduated from the Veterinary School of La, France, in 1989 and holds a national degree in toxicologic pathology. He then joined the CRO branch of CRL close to La, and later Bayer CropScience near Nice, France. Since 2003 he works for Janssen Pharmaceutica in Beerse, Belgium. Throughout his career, he was interested in special stains (especially immunohistocit-istry, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy) and special techniques, and in mentoring young colleagues undergoing their veterinary pathology residency. He currently leads the digital pathology efforts in the pathology department, for both the infrastructure/platform and the scientific applications; he also liaises with IT (for optimizing platform design) and other scientific departments/therapeutic areas (for synergy in bringing tools on the platform). He is also a strong advocate of cooperation among international toxicologic pathology societies and is very involved in the interaction with regulatory bodies. He is a former president of the French Society of Toxicologic Pathology and an active member of the European and North American STP.
