Erik H. Middlebrooks, MD, is a board-certified neuroradiologist and Professor of Radiology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, with a joint appointment in the Department of Neurosurgery. He also serves as Associate Chair for Research and Innovation in the Department of Radiology, where he leads pioneering efforts in advanced neuroimaging, artificial intelligence, and translational neuroscience. His clinical expertise includes functional brain MRI, diffusion imaging, brain tumors, epilepsy, dementia, and image-guided evaluation of complex neurological disorders. His work is centered on translating cutting-edge imaging technologies into improved patient care.
Dr. Middlebrooks earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine before completing a diagnostic radiology residency, serving as Chief Resident, and pursuing a fellowship in Neuroradiology at the University of Florida. Since joining Mayo Clinic in 2017, he has established an internationally recognized research program focused on ultra-high-field 7-Tesla MRI, brain connectomics, and neuromodulation. His team develops advanced imaging biomarkers and AI-driven approaches to improve diagnosis, surgical planning, and outcome prediction for patients with Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, movement disorders, and other neurological diseases.
An internationally respected physician-scientist and educator, Dr. Middlebrooks has authored more than 170 peer-reviewed publications and serves in numerous leadership roles within the American Society of Neuroradiology and other professional organizations. He is the head of Mayo Clinic Florida's internationally recognized 7T MRI program—one of the highest-volume clinical ultra-high-field MRI centers in the world—and has received numerous honors for excellence in research, education, and innovation, including the Radiology Research Alliance New Investigator Award, the Outstanding Emerging Educator Award, and multiple national distinctions recognizing his contributions to neuroradiology and functional neuroimaging.
