Prof. Erich Schmutzhard graduated from University Innsbruck in 1974, he was trained in Tropical Medicine in Liverpool, UK. After 4 years of fieldwork in Tanzania, he specialized in Neurology and Critical Care Medicine at the Universities of Innsbruck, Austria, and Bangkok (Mahidol University), Thailand. Since the late eighties, he was a lecturer in Tropical Neurology and Critical Care Neurology at the University Innsbruck, Austria. In 2000 he was appointed Professor for Neurocritical Care Medicine in Innsbruck, in 2002 Guest Professor in Osijek, Croatia, in 2006 Honorary Professor in Tripoli, Lybia. He is Head of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Task Force: „Neurology in Africa“, Austria's delegate to the World Federation of Neurology (WFN), and Coordinator for the Innsbruck Medical University to ASEA Uninet and Eurasia-Pacific University networks. His major research interests are „Tropical Neurology and Neuroepidemiology“ and „Clinical and Experimental Critical Care Neurology“. Major research fields combining these two fields of interest are „Cerebral Malaria, long-term sequelae“ and „experimental murine Cerebral Malaria“, as well as „Epilepsy in Africa“, in particular, „Nodding syndrome in Tanzania and Uganda“. He has published more than 300 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and participated in many international clinical trials.
