Eric Hume, MD is the Medical Director of the Quality and Safety Department of Orthopedic Surgery in the Perelman School of Medicine, an Associate Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery, and Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. As a clinician committed to quality, he has found opportunities to build evidence-based safe processes shared across the service line, most recently developing EPIC clinical pathway. He has grown an interdisciplinary group of clinical and non-clinical colleagues focused on lowering perioperative risk for hip and knee arthroplasty patients and managing large hip and knee bundles, BPCI now BPCI-A and IBC, across Penn Medicine campuses. His research and innovation include Home Connect and Quil, both aimed arthroplasty patient preop education and postop discharge to home safely.

His RVU project showed surgical time poorly relates to outcomes and fails to capture work time needed to prepare patient for surgery, and the impact of bundle care on access to surgical care of at-risk patient groups and risk mitigation for arthroplasty patients. He manages program-awarded Joint Commission Hip and Knee Certificates and is planning application for the Joint Commission Advanced Hip /Knee Program with the Penn Presbyterian clinical and administrative team. With the department team, he has lead collection of PROs and submission of patient data to the American Joint Replacement Registry. Most satisfying to him is supporting the career growth of members of the outcomes group, and the success that improving quality and safety leads to less expensive care within a bundle structure.
