Eric Sorenson MD

Eric James Sorenson, MD, is a Professor of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and an internationally recognized expert in neuromuscular disorders, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), clinical neurophysiology, and electromyography (EMG). With decades of experience in patient care, research, and medical education, he has played a leading role in advancing the diagnosis and treatment of motor neuron diseases and peripheral nerve disorders. His clinical practice focuses on ALS, primary lateral sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, electrodiagnostic medicine, and clinical neurophysiology.

Dr. Sorenson earned his medical degree from Mayo Medical School and completed his neurology residency at Mayo Clinic before pursuing fellowship training in Neuromuscular Diseases at the University of Michigan Medical Center. He also earned a Master of Science in Clinical Research from Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He is board-certified in Neurology and Neuromuscular Medicine.

A pioneer in ALS research, Dr. Sorenson founded and directed the Mayo Clinic ALS Center and has contributed extensively to the understanding of disease progression, epidemiology, clinical trial design, and electrophysiologic biomarkers in motor neuron disease. His scholarly work includes influential publications on ALS outcomes, clinical neurophysiology, and emerging therapeutic strategies, helping shape standards of care and research initiatives worldwide.

Dr. Sorenson has held numerous national leadership positions, including President of the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) and leadership roles within the National ALS Research Group and the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. He has served on advisory committees for the ALS Association and international ALS research organizations, contributing to the advancement of neuromuscular medicine and professional education.
